Community Involvement

The Northwestern Mutual Community Action Committee works to enhance community involvement and our local brand through volunteer and fundraising efforts focused on supporting the mission of eradicating childhood cancer. We provide the Greater Tampa Bay community “with opportunities to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures. We strive to encourage and empower others to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.”

The Lemon Drop - November 9, 2017 - Our Signature Fundraising Event

We like to party for a cause! Each fall we host our own cocktail party - The Lemon Drop. Guests enjoy food, drinks including our signature Lemon Drop cocktail, music and an amazing silent/live auction. All proceeds benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Night at the Museum - July 8, 2017

Each year we host a family friendly event called "Night at the Museum" at the Great Explorations Children's Museum.  Kids had a blast exploring the exhibits, getting their faces painted, more. All proceeds from the event benefitted Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Supporting the Fight Against Childhood Cancer

2016 Northwestern Mutual Childhood Cancer Impact Award

Northwestern Mutual congratulates our Greater Tampa Bay office for winning the 2016 Childhood Cancer Impact Award. Managing Partner Kevin O’Connell and members of Northwestern Mutual’s Tampa office spent nearly 1,100 hours volunteering and fundraising for childhood cancer programs, raising more than $55,000 in 2015. In addition to renting out a children’s museum for its Night at the Museum event and hosting its signature Lemon Drop cocktail party, the office hosted more than 10 lemonade stands and office fundraisers throughout the year.

$200,000 Grant Provided to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hopsital in St. Petersburg, Florida

Friday, August 19, 2016: Northwestern Mutual-Tampa presented a $200,000 grant to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Funds will help expand services to pediatric brain tumor patients – the second-most common cause of cancer in children. The grant is being awarded through Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Impact Awards, which are given to four offices nationwide for their outstanding commitment to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, the official charity partner of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation’s Childhood Cancer Program. The Northwestern Mutual-Tampa office received $50,000 through the grant program and was then named Most Exceptional for its efforts, resulting in an additional $50,000. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has also agreed to match the $100,000 with an additional $100,000, bringing the total gift to $200,000.

We are truly honored to be able to make an impact in our local community in this way. We are deeply touched by the stories of the families we've come to know in the recent years that have or are still fighting tough battles with pediatric cancer. We hope this grant will help provide better treatments and care for all the families seeking help at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

Lemonade Stands: We host a number of lemonade stands to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation throughout each year. Please check back for dates and locations of our 2017 stands.
